Do you need to renew your ITIN?

We can advise you on whether your ITIN is valid if you need to file a US tax return in 2021.

Why would my ITIN expire?

  1. The ITIN was not used on a U.S. tax return at least once for tax years 2017-2019.
  2. The ITIN consists of the middle digit 88 (For example: 9NN-88-NNNN).
  3. The ITIN has the middle digits 90-99.
  4. The ITIN was allocated before 2013 and has not already been renewed.

Additional Information you need to know:

  • The ITIN needs to be renewed before it is included on a U.S. tax return or a claim for refund that you plan to file in 2021.
  • You cannot have both an ITIN and an SSN. Therefore, if you have or are eligible for a Social Security number, you should not renew your ITIN.
  • You will receive an email notification informing you that an ITIN on your tax return might be expiring in case you have filed a U.S. tax return in the last three years using an ITIN for you, your spouse or your dependents.
  • If your ITIN has not been included on a U.S. tax return at least once in the last three tax years, you will not be notified by the IRS.
