What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number that assists foreign taxpayers in filing a tax return.

An example of an ITIN is 9XX-73-XXXX.

Both people who live and do not live in the US, as well as their spouses and dependents, can apply for an ITIN if they are not eligible for a social security number.
