What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number that allows foreign taxpayers to file tax returns in the US.

An example of an ITIN is 9XX-73-XXXX.

Individuals who live in the US and abroad, as well as their spouses and dependants, may be required to apply for an ITIN if they are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).

It is important to re-iterate that if you have a Social Security Number (SSN), you do not need to apply for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).

Do I need an ITIN?

Here are some common examples of why you might need to apply for an ITIN:

  • You wish to claim inheritance on US real estate
  • You have business dealings in the US
  • You are the partner/spouse of a US citizen but you are not eligible for a Social Security Number
  • You are the dependant of a US citizen but you are not eligible for a Social Security Number
